In July 1994, floodwaters overwhelmed Montezuma, covering downtown and changing the community in ways no measured waterline fully captures. Today, placards throughout town mark how high the water rose. They commemorate the visible reach of the flood, but the deeper floodlines remain invisible, carried through families, businesses, memories, and the generations who rebuilt what the water left behind.

Floodline Players takes its name from those markers and from everything they represent: loss, memory, resilience, renewal, and the strength of people choosing to build again.

Founded by Austin Bradley and Spencer Maddox, Floodline Players began with a shared belief that small towns deserve exceptional artistic experiences, local talent deserves meaningful opportunities, and people need places where they belong. We saw theatre not only as entertainment, but as a way to develop confidence, create relationships, strengthen community pride, and help people believe more deeply in themselves and in Montezuma.

By chance, our first project began during the week Montezuma marked the 32nd anniversary of the flood. While the community remembered one of the most defining moments in its history, children gathered for Floodline’s inaugural theatre summer camp to learn, create, and prepare a production together. We did not plan the connection, but it became a fitting beginning: a new generation standing in a community shaped by resilience and building something joyful together.

That experience captured the purpose of Floodline Players. A child steps onto a stage and finds confidence. A volunteer finds purpose and connection. A local performer learns their talent has value here. Families gather in familiar places and experience them differently. People who might never have met become part of the same story.

Our work extends beyond producing shows. We use theatre, live performance, arts education, concerts, and community gatherings to build people, relationships, traditions, and a stronger sense of ownership in Montezuma’s future. Every production gives someone a role to play. Every shared experience creates another reason to gather. Every participant adds something meaningful to the community we are building together.
